A few days ago, I was reading a blog post by a friend of mine, and somewhere in the post was something about slowing down in life. That part really made me take time to ponder, because I feel that in today’s world, we are all so caught up in chasing money, chasing dreams, chasing people; all to a point where we begin to let life pass us by so fast.
I am not trying to say that it’s wrong to work, to study to chase our dreams or do anything of that sort; but if we are so involved in such things that we forget to take time and appreciate the beauty of life, then it does become a problem. As much as we want to not waste any time in our lives (because we believe we can put it into much ‘constructive’ use), we still need to make the time for the things that really matter.
For example, you’ll often see people take their breakfast very quickly so that they can get to work early, or skip lunch with their friends because they have some project to work on. That too, is hurrying through life. Wake up in the morning, sit down, admire the sunrise and enjoy your cup of tea or coffee. If it means waking up thirty minutes earlier so that you can savour your morning tea, then do it. If it means staying up a bit later in the night so that you can sit down and enjoy lunch with your friends, then do it as well.
There is also the perception than we need to achieve our goals by a certain time. Once more, there’s nothing wrong with that, but if it’s getting in the way of you taking time to actually LIVE, then that’s a problem. If God says that you will get to a certain peak of success at a specific time in your life, nothing you do can change that, not even working fifty times harder than you already are. In short, God already knows when, where and how it will all work out for you, so quit stressing about it. You simply need to do your part, let it go, and trust the process.
Don’t let your work or the chase of your goals/dreams/ambitions or your hobby, whatever it is; don’t let it consume you. Sometimes you will feel as if you are making extremely slow progress in a certain sector of your life, but that’s okay. As long as your making progress, take it easy on yourself. Don’t put pressure on yourself, because that will only make you more miserable. SLOW DOWN.
I have also come to realize that happiness in life comes from the very little things. We think that happiness is this huge mountain peak that we are trying to get to, yet it’s right there with us. Happiness is around us; the people, the nature, the walks, the struggles we conquer, the animals, the traveling. Happiness is right there, but we can never see or feel it until we stop rushing through life.
Again, we often look for happiness in the wrong places. For example, we will try so hard to impress a certain group of friends, forgetting that our most genuine friends are those that we go home to; our family. We try so hard to be satisfied by the world, yet all the satisfaction we need is from up above; God. We can never truly learn what matters in our lives until we slow down and actually take the time to look around. As we rush through life, we never get time to truly focus on those who care.
We rush through life because deep down, we all feel under pressure to achieve something, whether directly or indirectly; but why struggle so much when we can lay it all down before God? Of course, we have to do our part, but sometimes we try so hard as though we are trying to do God’s part too, or as though we don’t trust Him. Take a breath, do your part, then chill, because God’s got this!
One thing about rushing through life is that, more often than not, we lose it. We feel like our minds are literally about to blow up, and everything seems so out of place. If we take the time to slow down, we will be able to learn how to maintain a peace of mind, even when people are getting on our last nerve. We will learn to keep calm and composed, even when we are feeling scared or worried. Truth is, we need a lot of things in life, and one of them is most definitely inner peace.
As I have mentioned, I think that we often rush through life because we are all trying to achieve something, but at the end of the day, some things are just not meant to be rushed. Maybe you want to rush through the process of sweating, hustling, giving so much input and getting nothing in return (because it sucks! I get it); but what if that is exactly what you need to go through so as to get to your goals/dreams? This applies, not only in chasing our dreams, but in other aspects of our lives too. Some things are just not meant to be rushed. Some things need time to grow.
Take time for yourself. Do things your way. Go at your own pace. I know that the world is always trying to tell you what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and how fast it should be done, but it’s not about the world. It’s about you. Call time out, and focus on you!
Likewise, take time to completely free your thoughts of anything problems, fears, worries or work/career/school/goals- related thoughts, and just relax. Go for a swim at the beach, take a long walk by yourself, watch a movie while eating some good food, go enjoy some icecream, even pack your bags, fly out of the country and take a vacation. YOU NEED IT. You are not a robot, and sometimes, you just need to drown the voices of the world away, listen to the beat of your heart and smile.
Of course, sometimes, life gets to us, people get to us, even our worries get to us. That is exactly why we need to slow down; so that we can take time to listen to the voices of those who REALLY matter. Sometimes we need to sit down and remind ourselves that we have got it, and we are doing great. Sometimes, we just need to slow down.
As I have already mentioned so many times already, it’s very important to unplug. Stop rushing through life and just unplug for a moment. Take a moment to breathe and admire the beauty around you, to listen to good music, to dance like no-one’s watching. Slow down and take time to live.
TAKE TIME TO DO NOTHING! I know it sounds insane, but think of it; when was the last time you sat down and watched a movie or even just stared at the TV screen doing nothing? It sounds stupid, but even simply going to sit in a park and watching people walk by for hours will seriously rejuvenate you. As I said, you are not a robot. You need to relax.
The more we rush through life, the more we miss important milestones, not just of our own, but even of those around us. I see so many people get so dedicated to their jobs, but sadly, they miss everything that goes on in the lives of their friends and family. They keep complaining that life is rushing past them. Why don’t you slow down? Joy comes from those moments of spontaneous laughter, eating meals together, watching movies together, traveling, visiting the and helping the helpless in society, adopting and taking care of a pet; joy is in those little things. Joy is in living.
Don’t over-think it, don’t second guess it; just take a deep breathe and SLOW DOWN! Stop letting life rush past you.
In conclusion, take it easy. Slow down. Do more than just exist, LIVE.
Thank you so much for reading. As always, remember to:
Have a lovely week ahead! 🙂
